Unlike gas cars with mechanical door locks, electric vehicles use a 12V electrical system to control door locks, windows, and emergency releases. When the main battery is depleted or the 12V system fails—which can happen during a crash, in a fire, or from manufacturing defects—the doors lock you inside. You cannot manually override them. Rescue teams have documented cases of EV fires where drivers could not exit because the electrical systems had failed.

EV battery fires don't behave like ordinary fires. When a lithium-ion battery enters thermal runaway (a chain reaction of internal failures), it generates its own oxygen at the chemical level. This means it can burn even in an airtight compartment. Water, fire blankets, and CO2 extinguishers have limited or no effect. The fire spreads unpredictably through the battery pack, and temperatures exceed 2,000°F. This isn't a small flame—it's an uncontrollable inferno that burns from the inside out.

Modern cars, especially EVs, use tempered safety glass that is engineered to resist impact and shattering. While this protects you in a normal accident, it becomes a trap in an emergency exit scenario. Punching, kicking, or striking tempered glass with ordinary force won't break it. A fire axe, hammer, or crowbar might eventually work, but ordinary tools take precious seconds or minutes. In a thermal runaway scenario where you have 60-90 seconds, tempered glass becomes a prison wall. This is why emergency responders carry specialized breaking tools.

The average emergency response time in the US is 10-12 minutes from call to arrival. A fire department is trained and equipped to handle battery fires, but they must travel, assess the scene, and deploy equipment. In a thermal runaway event, you don't have 11 minutes. You have approximately 90 seconds before the interior temperature becomes lethal, toxic gases fill the cabin, and escape becomes physically impossible. By the time sirens arrive, you're either safe or you're not. No one is coming to help you in time.

Most modern EVs have an emergency door release, but it's hidden in a inconvenient location, requires multiple steps to access, and is often only explained in a 500-page owner's manual that sits in your glove box unread. Some EVs require you to remove a plastic panel, flip a handle, or locate a tiny lever in near-darkness. In a real emergency, fumbling in panic for a hidden mechanism could cost you critical seconds. Even if you know where it is, fine motor skills deteriorate under extreme stress and heat. And if the electrical system has failed (Danger #1), the emergency release may not work either.
